Robert the Doll isn’t the only creepy and mysterious artifact haunting Key West’s Fort East Martello Museum.

A recent Travel Channel feature highlighted the grave of Elena Hoyos in their article “6 Museums That Are Home To Creepy And Mysterious Artifacts.”

Elena Hoyos is known as the Key West girl who was removed from her grave by Count Karl Tanzler von Cosel. Tanzler reconstructed her body and lived with her corpse for 7 years.

The tombstone from Elena’s crypt shattered in an explosion shortly after von Cosel left Key West. It is one of many haunted objects in the haunted Civil War fort turned museum.

While many people call this a love story, Ghost Key West uncovered evidence that indicates Elena Hoyos was murdered. You can see the exploding tombstone and perhaps encounter the spirit of Elena Hoyos on one of Ghost Key West’s VIP Ghost Tours.
